Ernie was born and raised in Merced.  After graduating from high school in 1969, Ernie was drafted to viet Nom right out of Merced College.  After Ernie did his tour of duty, Ernie tried a variety of jobs in the automotive industry and found transmission repair was his forte.  Ernie worked for a local transmission shop for 16 years before opening Ernie's Transmission Shop in the early 1990s.

Ernie is and has been an active member of many local community organizations.  He is currently a director of the Merced Trade Club, Commander of the American Legion Post 83, member of the Merced Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Member of Kiwanis, Past President of Local Automotive Service COuncil Chapter 33 Merced, and Past Director of the Greater Merced Chamber of Commerce.
